BirkenEd’s Place – w/c 13th February
20th February 2023
This week at BirkenEd’s Place, we have been continuing our second phase of engagement for Dock Branch Neighbourhood – a project that has been a key point of discussion in the space since we opened and that many visitors have been excited for and keen to find out more about. Marking the end of our second phase of engagement for Dock Branch Neighbourhood, on Saturday 18th February, we hosted a free Dock Branch walking conversation with Mark Leitner-Murphy of Maccreanor Lavington (architects) and members from OPEN (landscape). The walk was well attended with some rich and valuable conversations both during the walk and back at BirkenEd’s Place afterwards.
It has been a busy week of events in the space and following our recent display of the Tranmere Tunnels project, we are thrilled to have another community project in the space – Ron’s Place. Ron’s Place is an extraordinary example of an immersive ‘Outsider Art’ environment created by the late Ron Gittins in Birkenhead. We are currently hosting an exhibition of material from Ron’s Place which includes paintings, art objects and photographs of this outstanding example of Outsider Art. As the theme of the exhibition is #inspiredbyRonsPlace, the display includes artworks and documentation that demonstrate how Ron’s Place has inspired all sorts of people to explore their own creativity. On Wednesday, we were delighted to deliver another young person’s workshop in BirkenEd’s Place for Co-op Academy Bebington. This workshop focused on designing public realm pieces for safer public spaces. Thank you to the pupils for their outstanding behaviour and creativity and to staff who supported the workshop. This week we also joined Maccreanor Lavington, Wirral Council and Liverpool Architecture Festival for an exciting sold-out evening event discussing the Birkenhead 2040 Framework, especially Dock Branch Masterplan and Cleveland Street plans.
Thank you to everyone who has supported us in the space this last week – Chithra Marsh, Liam Briggs, Mark Leitner-Murphy, Alfie Gill-Hannan, James Moore, Ian Gordon, and Chris Wohlers.
